Sarah Tomley  Counsellor and IFS Therapist (L3), BA, BSc, MBACP, UKCP (Accredited)

Picture
An experienced integrative counsellor with a special interest in anxiety, depression, OCD and multi-generational addictive behaviours.
Life is hard. And in challenging times the strategies we rely on to keep us going can fail just when we need them most – leaving us feeling stuck, fearful and unsure of what to do next. Every part of us comes under stress at this point, and we can feel ourselves bouncing from anxiety to self-criticism to obsessively eating/drinking/gambling/cleaning (whatever has worked before) or from rejection to fury to guiltily hiding. This is the human condition, and we all have wheeling processes of behaviour such as these that can get put into play. The good news is that there is a way to speak to every part that gets caught up in these cycles, and carefully bring health and healing back into the system.
I use an integrative approach of
and Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Interpersonal Neurobiology  to help clients develop a new sense of clarity, confidence and calm, so that life feels truly negotiable again.

Since 2012, I have offered counselling to men and women in Cambridge and Suffolk for several organisations, including Suffolk MIND, The Cogwheel Trust, Cruse Bereavement Care and The Miscarriage Association.

Sarah is the author of Instant Psychology (Welbeck Group, 2021),  What Would Freud Do? (Octopus Books, 2017), and co-author of The Children's Book of Philosophy (DK, 2015) and The Sociology Book (DK, 2015).

Lucy Summerscales  MBACP, BA, BSc, Adv Dip

Picture
An integrative counsellor specialising in working with children, who draws on various different therapeutic approaches to help her clients reach a new understanding and perspective.

At the heart of my approach is the belief that it is the relationship between us that can help to bring about change: by listening attentively, and by working together with an open mind, questioning and gently challenging, we can explore what it is that troubles you. I provide a safe and non-judgemental space and am committed to understanding your experience from your point of view.

I have extensive experience of working with depression, bereavement and loss, and have had the privilege of working with clients at the
St Helena Hospice and North East Essex Bereavement Service for several years. I also work at Colchester Sixth Form College as a student counsellor, where my work includes anxiety, stress, abuse, assault, eating disorders and self harm. In my work at Insight Counselling Ipswich, I see clients with a broad range of issues, including trauma, depression, loss and relationship issues, and I offer both short-term counselling and longer-term psychotherapeutic work. I am now beginning to take on private clients aged 16–18.

I have a Diploma in Creative Counselling for Children and Young People with Matrix College of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
I am a member of BACP (the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists) and UKCP (The UK Council for Psychotherapy) and I have a BSc (Hons) degree from Middlesex University in Integrative Psychotherapeutic Counselling.

Lucy is experienced in working with anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, insomnia, bereavement, abuse, and life and relationship crises. She has been a journalist and writer for many years and often uses therapeutic writing with clients if they wish.

An awful lot of people suffer with anxiety and depression, or have concerns about behaviour,
addictions, work or relationships. But we are all unique, each with our own set of difficulties and background stories. The problems that have driven you to seek help are often symptoms of deeper issues, which we can explore, as well as finding ways to help you to deal with everyday life. There is not one answer that fits everyone, which is why I spend time getting to know you, to help you find what you need to move forward.

My approach is integrative, which means I am familiar with many theories and techniques that I can draw from and adapt to each client. I specialise in trauma and work with clients who have experienced rape, abuse and childhood sexual abuse at the Sue Lambert Trust. Trauma comes in many guises and is also a rich source for the latest research and discoveries in counselling theory and neuroscience. “The paradox of trauma,” wrote psychologist Peter Levine, “is that it has both the power to destroy and the power to transform and resurrect.”

My counselling practice is based in Ipswich on Tuesdays, and in Eye, north Suffolk on Saturdays and evenings.

Lucy is the author of Who the Hell is Melanie Klein? (Bowden & Brazil, 2020)
